We woke up in the morning and took some shots of the hotel before heading down to Yellowstone. We were going to do the park in one day! Kira was a little slow getting going but finally rallied. It took a little longer to get there than we expected, but once there we saw our first elk . We hit the brakes, grabbed the camera, and raced for a shot. A real elk! We were amazed. Kira spent time pointing out the trails left by the local bison. About 10 elk and 20 bison later we realized that it wasn't as special as we had thought. But we still kept snapping pictures. Our first stop in the park was Geyserville, where we got out to see the Norris geyser and other sights. We stopped at Upper Falls, and walked about a half mile from Upper to Lower Falls. Great scenery and pictures. Our next stop was a long hike to Bog Lake. We bit off a little more than we could chew on this one, but the scenery was beautiful, and, of course, we saw another elk -- a huge male with big horns. Our last big hike was up to the observatory. It was pretty fun until we hit snow line. We both decided at that point it was time to turn back. We ran into a fox on the way down, and had a National Geographic moment as the fox caught and ate a chipmunk in front of our eyes. Exhausted, we stopped for chips and a drink and headed to Chico Springs. |
